Aidi Eye Hospital has launched the first "Green Channel for Retinal Detachment" in Sichuan

“The decisive factor for RDretinal detachment treatment is time.””, said yesterday by Hu Yuzhang, renowned eye specialist in ocular fundus diseases in Sichuan. It is reported that in some foreign countries, patients suffering from retinal detachment could call for air rescue. However, in our province, there isn’t even an expressway for retinal detachment patients until now;and the patients have to wait in line bearing severe pain from the start of registration, whilst the best time for treatment is on the clock; In some cases, as time runs out, they would lose their sight permanently. In prevention of this tragedy and with the support of the ocular fundus disease expert team led by Hu Yuzhang, Aidi has launched the first “Green Channel for Retinal Detachment” to offer first aid, treatment and surgery services to the patients suffering retinal detachment or other eye diseases.

Yesterday, with an eye model in hand, Prof. Hu told us that though cornea is transplantable, retina is irreplaceable as it sticks to eye socket behind eyeball. Similar to a negative film, retina is bestrewn with blood vessels and nerves. The second it falls off, damages will be caused for the lack of nutrition in those vessels and nerves. Therefore, retinal detachment needs first aid and treatment as soon as possible; otherwise, those damages are permanent and the delay of treatment could cause perpetual blindness.

Retinal detachment needs not only timely treatment, but doctors with high technical requirements, emergency operation. At present, there are a very few hospitals capable of conducting this operation independently, like West China Hospital, Sichuan Provincial Hospital and Aidi Eye Hospital. Due to lack of competent hospitals as well as doctors and facilities, retinal detachment patients would wait for a month averagely in bed for surgery, resulting in perpetual damage to eyesight.

With a great expert team, Aidi Eye Hospital is setting about to establish the clinical and scientific research base for ocular fundus disease, in pursuance of whichAidi has launched the first “Green Channel for Retina Detachment” in the province. Hu further explained that the “Green Channel” is to provide patients with fastest access to hospital, treatment, posture guidance, preoperative examination and surgery, and it should be informed that time matters a lot for retina detachment treatment.

Hu also remarked that hypermyopia and ocular trauma are the main causes for retina detachment. One is likely to get retina detachment when the symptoms of floaters or visual field defect are felt, and immediate medical treatment should be resorted to without delay.
